Why drainage measured by the metre under-prices

One stack works out at sixty-two fittings against twenty-two metres of pipe, and roughly half the labour sits in the fittings. Measure it by the metre and the number is wrong before anyone has made a mistake. Public health work is full of items priced from the wrong document entirely.

What you will be able to do

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • measure public health work at the right level of detail
  • price fittings-heavy work without under-recovering labour
  • build a rate you can justify line by line
  • qualify what the drawings do not tell you

What it covers

  • Reading plumbing and drainage drawings, symbols and specifications
  • Pipe sizing and gradients, and above ground drainage principles
  • Take-offs: hot and cold water services, soil waste and vent, rainwater and syphonic systems, sanitaryware schedules
  • Two worked examples — a drainage stack and a small commercial unit
  • Labour norms, materials, specialist packages, preliminaries and overheads
  • Risk, qualifications and the review before submission

Common questions

Who is it for?

Trainee estimators, quantity surveyors moving into building services, and plumbers moving into estimating.

How long does it take?

There is no fixed length. It is 26 written lessons across 7 sections, and most people work through it over a few weeks alongside the job rather than in one sitting.

Is there a certificate, and does it count towards CPD?

No to both. This is training material, not a qualification, and it is not accredited by any awarding body. If you need a certificate for a professional requirement, this will not provide one.

How long do I keep access?

That depends how you buy. Bought outright, this course is yours permanently — one payment, no renewal, and revisions are included. On a subscription that covers it, you keep access for as long as the subscription runs, and access ends when you cancel.
